WISDOM - 30 April 2024

Paleontologist have been hard at work discovering and uncovering all sort of new knowledge about dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. In this blog post, I have a lot of new information to share with everyone interested in our ancient past and the wonderous animals that walked and crawled upon the Earth.

First up... Big ^$$ Snake!

Another monstrous snake was recently discovered in India. This big boy is close in size to the Titanoboa. Oh... you don't know about Titanoboa? Think of a massive python living in the Americas almost 50 feet long and 2,500 lbs in weight. You are in its food chain. Thank the stars above the monster lived 58 to 60 million years ago. Try this link...

Good stuff on Titanoboa

Back to the new snake monster... Vasuki indicus, named the after the mythical snake king Vasuki that wraps itself around the neck of the Hindu deity Shiva. Well, Vasuki indicus is estimated to be a bit longer and just as heavy as Titanoboa. Yes... you are in its food chain, as well. The fight between you and this monster would be like a modern-day python going after a rat. No contest. Again, thank the stars above this beast lived about 47 million years ago during a period of time in Earth's history that the temperatures were on average 14 degrees Fahrenheit hotter, and CO2 was 2x to 5x higher than today. These big ^$$ snakes were of the lineage of serpents, the Madtsoiide, that originated approximately 100 mya and most certainly could have had just as huge an ancestor at the end of the Cretaceous.

What does Titanoboa and Vasuki indicus have to do with Primeval Origins? Well, the temperatures in the Time of First Man in the story were just as hot as the time of these monstrous serpents. Think of the story possibilities.

Next up... Big ^$$ Dino Raptors!

More prehistoric raptors are being discovered. This latest one, Fujianipus yingliangi, was found by its fossilized footprints in China. This beast is a megaraptor, almost 20 feet long. That's almost twice the size of the miss-named "Velociraptor" of Jurassic Park (Note: The velociraptors in the movies were sized larger than their ancient namesake... instead the raptor profiles were based on deinonychus). Further, raptor fossils are being found all over the globe making them, both the small turkey and wolf-sized animals and the much larger megaraptors, a dangerous... horrifying creature in the world of First Man in Primeval Origins. Below are a few links to this new discovery of this beast...

Birds... What are their origins and are they dinosaurs?

More and more evidence is piling up informing us that birds transitioned from a line of dinosaurs some 135+ mya and that several ancestral families of birds; ground birds, water birds, and various primitive flying species lived besides the dinosaurs and pterosaurs. Most of these ancient family lines went extinct with the dinosaurs 66 to 65 mya. What survived then experienced an evolutionary explosion in different species soon after the asteroids impact ending the Cretaceous period causing the mass extinction. Below are links to news articles on dinosaur-bird evolution...

Add the newest discoveries show therapods (meat eaters) weren't the only dinosaurs with feathers. Plant eaters also had feathers. Damn! That's cool. This means... the protofeather-bearing dinosaur ancestor is much older than the dinosaur-bird transition in the Jurassic-Cretaceous period. This common creature goes backward in time into or before the Triassic period to a common ancestor of both the herbivorous (specifically ornithischia) and carnivorous theropods (specifically coelurosauria) dinosaurs. A big deal for how all of the dinosaur looked and also how they behaved. Most, if not all dinosaurs may have had protofeathers and feathers in many different forms! Looks like artists are going to be busy updating most of our drawings and illustrations of these wonderous creatures. Links this this new discovery are below...

Again, what does this have to do with the Primeval Origins Epic Saga ancient story? Many dinosaurs written into the Primeval Origins® pages have plumage similar to what is currently being discovered by paleontologists. I love being ahead of the curve.

Tyrannosaurs were picky eaters!

Just like modern day orcas will hunt great white sharks, killing them and only eating their livers... so too did tyrannosaurs favor specific parts of their kills. A recently unearthed mid-sized tyrannosaur was discovered to have its last meal fossilized in its stomach. It appears tyrannosaurs favored drum legs just like many of us do at Thanksgiving dinner. No other body parts were in the beast's innards. Hummm. Picky. Picky. Picky. Below is the link to this article for all of you who are curious...

A one-of-a-kind Tyrannosaur fossil helps explain why these predators ruled the top of the food chain (msn.com)

What does this new discovery have to do with Primeval Origins®? You're going to have to read the books to find out.

Dinosaurs were not so long-lived as we thought!

It seems dinosaurs grew fast, lived hard lives, and died young. It was previously thought dinosaurs lived long lives, if not killed off before they grew to adults. Their growth was not like crocodiles, turtles, and other ancient reptiles. Looks like dinosaurs grew more like modern birds... fast! And dinosaurs may have maxed out in age by the time they reached their 30's. That's a lot of turnover generation to generation... more than previously thought. Which means there could be many more fossils to discover than once estimated. The link to this new article is below...

Dinosaurs Grew A Lot Faster And Lived A Lot Shorter Than We First Believed (msn.com)

This newly forming knowledge concerning dinosaurs is already baked into the Primeval Origins® story. Did I say that I love being ahead of the curve? Risky in storytelling, but the paleontological articles over the last couple of decades have been pointing more and more to dinosaurs being endothermic (warm-blooded) and more bird-like in metabolism though maybe at a lower average body temperature than the birds or mammals.

Big ^$$ Fish!

Oh, to be an angler in the prehistoric past. The fish stories we could tell. There would just not be enough room in the home to mount more than a weekend's worth of fishing adventures. Though not as old as the dinosaurs, I wanted to include this fish story in the blog as this salmon was big... like able to eat a small person. More interesting... it had tusks! What the hell? Evolution creates some weird animals. Not to mention the other strange things created in the past and what we're about to create messing recklessly with genetics. Damn CISPR invention! We'll put this fish into the category of other interesting and long-existing water creatures such as the armored sturgeon and coelacanth. These ancient big boy fish species are a catch any angler would love to tell stories about. The link to this tusked salmon is below...

This 400-pound prehistoric salmon had tusks like a warthog (msn.com)

Ancient waters... seas, rivers, lakes, ponds, swamps, and streams were just hellishly dangerous. Everything was eating everything and much more than what we have today the creatures in the waters were huge making First Man on the waters in Primeval Origins®... yes, part of the food chain.

I love sharing knowledge, especially about our ancient past and human history. Enjoy the reading.
